LAURA STANIFORTH, DESIGN STUDIO
TURKS AND CAICOS

PROFILE | LAURA | DESIGN STUDIO, TURKS AND CAICOS

British-born Laura Staniforth grew up immersed in the world of design. With an interior designer mum and a dad in construction, there were always home renovations and projects to help with. Laura has since followed in her family’s footsteps and entered the world of professional interior design herself. She has worked as a designer at Design Studio in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) for the last seven years.

Words by Natasha Were.

RL: What do you think makes a house a home?
LS: By not only having a place that is aesthetically pleasing but also works practically for how you will live in the space. A house furnished with photographs, books, and much-loved inherited pieces becomes a home.

RL: Can you share some of your top decorating tips with us?
LS: Pay attention to scale. Trust your instincts. Create a mood board of looks that inspire you. Plan ahead.

RL: What top tips would you recommend for adding a splash of colour to a home?
LS: I always suggest keeping your largest items in the home neutral and adding colour with smaller accents. You might want a bright blue sofa now, but if you grow bored of it in a year, that’s an expensive piece to replace. Adding blue pillows to a neutral sofa means you can keep changing your look and have fun with colour.

RL: What are you most excited about seeing in home design?
LS: Sustainably produced furniture and fabrics.

RL: What’s your biggest trend prediction for 2024?
LS: More natural and calm colours and textures.

RL: Has life in TCI informed your aesthetic?
LS: It has had to, yes. The same colours and materials that work in the UK don’t necessarily work in the tropics. The intensity of the light alters colour.

RL: What is it like working in TCI?
LS: Working in TCI means I get to work on some fabulous homes in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. It does, however, also mean we have the logistical struggles of working on a small island…it’s worth it though!

RL: What are your favourite parts of a project?
LS: I love those final moments of adding accessories and plumping the pillows,
seeing how your and your client’s vision have all come together.
