Lydia Uzzell, Interior Designer, Cayman Islands
A love of adventure brought Lydia Uzzell to Cayman's shores and an obsession with design led her to start an interior design firm in her spare bedroom. With unwavering support from her husband, awesome employees and the best clients she could ask for, Lydia Uzzell Interior Design has gone from strength to strength and now operates in a beautiful studio in George Town.
RL: Were you always interested in design?
LU: Not just interested, obsessed! I was studying business at university but spending every spare minute poring over design magazines, when a friend asked why I wasn’t studying design. I have no idea why it wasn’t on my radar before, but I made the switch and have never looked back.
RL: Tell us about the different services you offer.
LU: We love whole home furnishings projects or full service design. This means we work closely with the architect, client and MEP team to design bathrooms/closets/kitchens/etc, source finishes, furniture and accessories, lighting and plumbing fixtures, designing drapery... literally everything.
RL: Are some items worth splurging on?
LU: Absolutely – especially when they involve sitting or lying down. We spend a great deal of time on sofas and mattresses so they need to be amazingly comfortable.
RL: Are there myths about interior design you’d like to dispel?
LU: HGTV has perpetuated the myth that design can be done in an instant, without much forethought. The best design takes a huge amount of planning, talent, expertise, and time.
RL: Tell us about some of your favourite projects.
LU: Definitely the ones whee we undertake a second or third project for a client. By this stage we generally know them very well and the process flows naturally thanks to the trust that has been built.
RL: Do you have a favourite room to design?
LU: Tricky and awkward spaces are probably my favourite. I enjoy manipulating spaces to produce a functional and inviting room that feels like it was always intended to be that way.
RL: Where do you find design inspiration?
LU: Everywhere! TV, magazines, travel, nature, other designers, Pinterest... I especially enjoy travel – seeing how other cultures live and design encourages us to move away from what is familiar and provides unlimited inspiration.
RL: What makes a happy home?
LU: The people in it.
