Sugar Reef, Cayman Islands
A unique property in one of Cayman's most desirable residential communities.
Words by Natasha Were.
Named for its candy-toned colour scheme and sugary sand beach, Sugar Reef, originally built as a family home and later operated as a successful vacation rental villa, is a rare property that offers the best of both worlds: a secluded, oceanfront location with direct beach access and accommodation for up to 15 guests, combined with the high end finishes and the level of design features one would expect to find in an exclusive private residence.
A comprehensive renovation recently endowed the property with a functional layout and an easy flow, whilst adding graceful curves and natural materials to soften the strong architectural lines.
Approached via a sweeping driveway lined with an exuberance of flowering plants, on entering the property one is first struck by the dramatic views of sea and sky, visible through a series of French doors that line the sea-facing aspect and allow a seamless flow onto the pool deck, covered terrace and 110 feet of beachfront below.
Leading off this are the main gathering areas. In the kitchen, bespoke walnut cabinetry with push-to-open doors and drawers and pale two-tone quartz countertops create a warm yet uncluttered space. Ample food prep space, a large kitchen island and top quality appliances make cooking a pleasure; doing the dishes becomes an equally appealing task, looking out onto a Caribbean seascape.
In the dining area, a large table sits under elegant Bocci pendant lights matching the chandelier that hangs in the stairwell, and a dual zone built-in wine fridge, coffee machine and wet bar create the ultimate libation station. A barrel ceiling in the living room echoes the arches of the three sets of glass doors leading out onto the sun deck and infinity edge pool, with roll down blinds to create a shady retreat in the heat of the day, where one can enjoy the high tech Sonos wireless sound and entertainment systems.
Outdoors, a dining area is covered by a louvred pergola, while the attractive raw Jerusalem marble floor is cool to the touch, noticeably lowering the outdoor temperature in this gathering spot. Steps from the covered terrace and pool deck lead down to a stretch of secluded beach. Of the four bedroom suites, the ground floor suite with a walk-in shower is all on one level, making it easily accessible.
Three further bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms, are located on the upper level. A huge master bedroom offers both unchecked luxury and total privacy, with engineered wood floors, a king size bed, fitted walk-in wardrobe, private balcony and a show-stopping bathroom, the centrepiece of which is a spectacular see-through art installation by Alex Turco that does double duty as a screen between the Hansgrohe shower and the ergonomic, freestanding Victoria+Albert bathtub. The adjacent den, currently used as an additional single bedroom, could easily convert into a cosy home study.
A second master suite with engineered wood floors, tray ceilings and a spectacular ocean view also features a walk-in wardrobe and nook, private balcony and bathroom that are bathed in natural light.
A fourth bedroom, currently furnished with a double bed and additional bunk beds, and an en suite bathroom, provides ample accommodation for children or a young family.
Besides its numerous unique design features and upscale furniture and fabrics, Sugar Reef features all smart TVs and full home automation for easy remote management, making it an ideal property for vacation rentals or an enviable full time residence.
The property also offers peace of mind in terms of construction and sustainability: elevated 10 feet above sea level and protected by a sea wall, it is built from steel-reinforced concrete and features hurricane-rated windows, electric roll up shutters and also features exterior foam insulation, an insulated roof, propane appliances and an ultra-efficient air conditioning system.
