My Island - Fall 2013
Bermuda
K. Denaye Hinds - Director of Sustainability, OBM International
Bermuda offers so much more; relaxation, biking trails, art, culture, caves and music. A diver’s paradise, experience over 300 shipwrecks. Experience codfish and potatoes with Johnny bread on Sundays, fish chowder from Lobster Pot and wahoo at Docksiders. Every guest must have a fish sandwich from Art Mel’s Spicy Dicy – off the beaten path. No trip is complete without a Dark and Stormy and you must “swizzle” it up with a Rum Swizzle! With its British charm, US fort history and island laid-back vibe – you can’t help but fall in love with the friendly people the place and the experiences.
Turks & Caicos
Bernadette Hunt – Turks & Caicos Property
Rare days off are best spent with my family on Pelican Beach in Leeward on Grace Bay. After chasing my son around on the beach, we like to head to the Mango Reef at The Alexandra Resort for laid-back beachside dining. My favourite way to end the week is on the good ship S/V ATABEYRA, a 77’ traditionally-rigged schooner, where you can watch the sun go down with a drink in hand.
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Joslyn Peters – Sugar and Spice Salon
Start the day at Frenchtown Deli – their breakfast is the best on the island – then escape the hustle and bustle of downtown and head to Platform Beach in Peterborg. After hours of sunbathing and snorkelling in the crystal-clear water, my favourite way to end the day is at The Grille at Mahongany Run for dinner. With beautiful views of the golf course and amazing sunsets from the patio it should be on the must-do list for visitors.
Cayman Islands
Jan Tomkins – Broker, Azure Realty
Known for its turquoise water, white sandy beaches and year-round sunshine, days on Grand Cayman revolve on and around the sea. Head to Rum Point via boat every Sunday to drink ‘mudslides’ and catching up with friends on the beach, then make your way over to the Sandbar to watch the stingrays. The best jerk can be found in Red Bay, where – at the weekend – smoke fills the air, drawing you in. If meat is more your thing, my favourite spot is Copper Falls Steakhouse where the steaks remind me of growing up in Texas.
