My Island - Spring 2013
Four locals share their favourite island spots.
US VIRGIN ISLANDS
Star Fish Alley in St. John is a must. At certain times of the year tonnes of starfish gather there – it's like underwater star gazing. St. Croix is home to the Cruzan Rum Distillery, which has won more than 30 Spirit Awards – well worth venturing to the largest of the three islands for. Magen's Point in St. Thomas has amazing views. It’s the perfect place for a sunset drink and to roast marshmallows whilst listening to the ocean.

Turks & Caicos
In Grand Turk it’s all about Governor’s Beach, a big towel and ‘adult’ fruit punches. When I’m in Providenciales, The Deck at the Seven Stars Resort is perfect for an after-work drink while watching the sunset and listening to a local band. Bugaloos Conch Crawl is a new spot with an old feel and has tasty conch fritters. But my favourite is picking up a crab and conch salad from Uncle Dough’s Salad Bar then driving up to Sapodilla Bay for a picnic.

Antigua
Antigua is full of little coves and hidden caves. One of those is Pearns Bay, a gorgeous beach on the south side of the island just north of Jolly Beach. The fact that it’s only accessible by off road or boat makes it even more special. After a long day I like to hang out at C&C Wine Bar or Tides Restaurant, which is very local and the food is fantastic. They also have a small private beach, so it’s great for socialising.

Jamaica
A lazy weekend on the South Coast is my ideal escape. Stay in one of the area’s quaint cottages, and don’t turn on the TV (if there is one). Breakfast at Smurfs, then ride a fishing canoe out to Pelican Bar to sip Red Stripes and eat fried fish on a stilted hut two miles out at sea. Be sure to hit Jake’s Hotel for a cocktail at Dougie’s Bar, then off to Farmer Doul’s for their epic organic farm-to-table dinner in the hills.
