POSTCARD FROM ANGUILLA

Boasting some of the most dazzling sands in the Caribbean, several world-class resorts and an exquisite dining scene, days in Anguilla can easily fall into a relaxed ‘beach-eat-sleep-repeat’ rhythm. But if you want reggae vibes, off-road adventures and an unforgettable round of golf, this unhurried island has plenty of those too.

Words by Natasha Were.

SCOPE out the beaches. This diminutive island has 33 of its own, ranging from wide arcs of sparkling sand to tiny, sheltered coves and wild, surf-pounded stretches of coast. So, whatever your mood you’ll find one to suit – but don’t miss stunning Meads Bay, where the pristine sands are backed by an array of high-end restaurants.

EXPLORE the island’s wilder side with the Anguilla National Trust. Guides will take you on hikes through forests and tidal pools, visiting beaches and bat caves, or on adventures through mangroves, wetlands and the ruins of plantation estates – or you can join a night-time turtle patrol.

INDULGE in a nourishing spa treatment. The island boasts several top-notch wellness centres, but Thai House Spa at Zemi Beach House has Anguilla’s only hammam, housed in a 300-year-old Thai house.

RAPPEL down to Little Bay – it’s that or come by boat, as there’s no road access to this secluded, cliff-backed bay. And it’s a good thing too as if it were easier to get to, this idyllic spot would be overrun. Sunbathe, swim, snorkel and rock jump to your heart’s content.

TEE OFF at a Greg Norman-designed golf course. The 18-hole course, part of the Aurora Anguilla resort, offers views of neighbouring islands, greens running parallel to beaches, tee shots over salt ponds, and one of the most challenging 18th holes in the Caribbean.

DANCE to live music at The Dune Preserve. A ramshackle beach bar cobbled together from bits of driftwood and wrecked boats, this popular hangout is owned by local reggae legend Bankie Banx. Grab a cold beer and listen to him and other famous guests performing live on certain evenings.

SAMPLE  some of Anguilla’s finest restaurants. Jacala on Meads Bay is arguably the best place to enjoy a luxurious, long and lazy lunch: classical French cuisine, a chilled bottle of rosé and endless beach views. For dinner, visit Blanchard’s for creative international cuisine in a quintessentially Caribbean setting or go the street food route at the Strip, a street lined with food trucks and shacks serving up finger-licking local fare.

SLEEP soundly at the Four Seasons. Set on a bluff between two beaches, with three pools and four restaurants, the resort’s rooms, suites and villas promise serenity and comfort, while staff and amenities ensure your every desire is satisfied.
